Sudan Street Girls Safe House

News reports of the suffering in Sudan flood the airwaves nearly every day. Sudan is the largest nation state in Africa.

  • Population: 30 million people of diverse ethnic groups.
  • Over 93% of its citizens living in poverty.
  • In the midst of one of Africa's longest running civil-more than 4 decades.
  • Human death toll estimated at nearly two million people.
  • Four million displaced since 1983.
  • Capitol city, Khartoum- population of 7 million people.
  • Nearly 2 million are displaced people who live in camps surrounding the city.
  • Number of street children is estimated at nearly 40,000.

These children have suffered trauma as a result of war and loss of family. They have no support network and their basic rights to life, health and family life are under threat every day.

We are working in partnership with AMAL (Sudanese Non Governmental Organization) and Jim and Elaine Bennett to open a Save House for homeless girls.

Target Population:
Girls between the ages of three and twelve, who have been left to their own devices with no adult support and no permanent, stable home. This age group is chosen because it is believed that they will be more malleable than older girls who are tempted to adopt a life style of prostitution.

Objectives:

  • To provide a safe home setting initially for eight girls.
  • Provide a furnished house with bathroom, shower, kitchen facilities.
  • Provide basic needs of clothes, food, hygiene, safety.
  • Provide therapy for trauma release and other issues.
  • Provide emotional support, support for educational and career goals, support for integration back into their community.
  • House will include space for vegetable, fruit, and flower gardens.
  • Located within neighborhoods of Khartoum.
  • Provide caretakers who will double as counselors & therapists, an administrator & an educator.

Annual Budget
